## How to recognise it

- The top of the abdomen is shiny, black, and hairless — this is the decisive separator from a bumble bee, whose abdomen is densely furry.
- Large and robust at 12 to 25 mm, with a fuzzy yellow thorax.
- Males hover aggressively near nest sites and cannot sting at all; females can sting but rarely do.

## What it leaves behind

- Perfectly round entry holes about 12 mm in diameter in bare softwood — fascia, eaves, decking, railings, and outdoor furniture.
- Coarse sawdust beneath the hole and yellowish staining on the wood below it.
- Buzzing and hovering activity around eaves in spring.

## Why an infestation persists

Carpenter bees excavate galleries in wood to nest rather than eating it, strongly preferring bare, unpainted, weathered softwood. Individual galleries are extended year after year, and cumulative damage over many seasons can become structurally meaningful. Woodpeckers enlarging galleries to reach larvae often cause more visible damage than the bees. They are also effective pollinators.


## Where it occurs

Throughout the United States, most commonly reported in the South and East.

## What prevents it

- Paint or varnish exposed softwood — they strongly prefer bare weathered wood, and a maintained finish is genuinely effective.
- Fill and finish existing galleries in autumn after activity ends.
- Use hardwood or finished material for new trim, railings, and outdoor furniture.

## Commonly confused with

- **Bumble bee** (*Bombus spp.*) — The entire abdomen is densely furry, including the top — this is the decisive separator from a carpenter bee, whose upper abdomen is shiny, black, and bare.
- **Honey bee** (*Apis mellifera*) — Body is densely covered in fine hairs, giving a fuzzy appearance, and the colouring is muted golden-brown to amber with darker bands rather than bright yellow.

**Verdict:** prevention-first. Maintaining a painted or sealed finish on exposed softwood addresses carpenter bees directly, and they are valuable pollinators.
