Sounds in walls or ceilings
Where the sound is, and when, narrows it considerably. Overhead at night is a different animal from floor level at night, and daytime activity in an attic is different again.
How to examine it
- Note the time. Activity just after dark and before dawn points to rodents; daytime activity in a roof space points more often to squirrels or birds.
- Note the height. Overhead in a ceiling or attic is a different animal from floor level and inside a wall.
- Note the character. Light rapid scratching, heavier scurrying, a slow dry rustling, and gnawing on hard material are four different signals.
- Note whether it moves along a consistent route or stays in one place. A route suggests travel; one place suggests a nest.
- Go into the space above or below and look for droppings, rub marks, or disturbed insulation along the line the sound follows.
- Do not assume the sound is where the animal enters. Follow it outward to the roofline or the grade line to find the actual access point.

What else gets mistaken for this
- Plumbing. Pipes ticking as they expand and contract with hot water are the single most common false alarm, and the giveaway is that the sound follows the heating or hot water schedule rather than dusk and dawn.
- Ductwork and HVAC, which pop and tick as metal expands, always in the same place and always tied to the system cycling.
- Wind. Air moving through a vent, a loose flashing, or a gap in soffit produces scratching and rattling that tracks the weather rather than the time of day.
- Ice dams and thermal movement in a roof during a freeze-thaw cycle.
- Trees. A branch against a roof or gutter in wind is frequently reported as an animal, and the test is whether the sound stops when the wind does.
- Nesting birds, which are diurnal, noisiest at dawn, and often accompanied by chirping that is unmistakable once you listen for it.
What this evidence cannot tell you
Sound narrows the group and the location. It cannot identify the species on its own, and it is a poor guide to numbers — a single animal in a resonant ceiling void can sound like several. It also misleads about position. Sound travels along joists and through cavities, so the point where it is loudest is frequently not where the animal is, and almost never where it entered. Droppings and rub marks are what actually locate the route.
What to do with what you found
Confirm with physical evidence before acting on sound alone. Go into the space and look for droppings, whose size and end shape will settle the species, and for greasy rub marks that mark a habitual route. If the sound is overhead and the property is in the southern or coastal states, check the roofline and any branch contacting the roof. If it is at floor level, check the foundation line and the drain runs. Either way the durable action is sealing the access point, not removing the occupant.
Common mistakes
- Acting on sound alone without going into the space to confirm with droppings or rub marks.
- Assuming daytime scratching overhead is rats. It is more often squirrels, which in many states carry legal restrictions on removal timing and method.
- Cutting into a ceiling at the loudest point, which is frequently not where the animal is.
- Sealing the roofline while animals are still inside, which traps them in the structure.
- Concluding the problem is resolved when the noise stops seasonally, without having found the entry point.
