Most people have not seen the animal. Start with whatever you did see.
Bites are not reliably identifiable by appearance
This is the honest answer, and almost every other site gives a different one. Skin reactions to insect bites vary enormously between people, many non-bite conditions look identical, and the same insect produces different marks on different people. A "bite identification chart" cannot tell you what bit you. What actually identifies the cause is finding the insect or its evidence in the environment — so start there instead. A reaction that is spreading, blistering, infected, or accompanied by fever or difficulty breathing is a matter for a medical professional now, not a website.
How many legs does it have?
Count on one side and double it. Six is an insect; eight is an arachnid.
A centipede, millipede, or similar
Identifiable with care
Animals with far more than eight legs are centipedes (one pair per body segment, fast-moving) or millipedes (two pairs per segment, slow, often curling when disturbed). Both are moisture-associated and are indicators rather than problems: they appear indoors when there is damp, and correcting the moisture removes the habitat.
Does it have wings right now?
A termite swarmer
Identifiable with care
A straight, uniform body with no pinched waist, straight beaded antennae, and four wings of equal length extending past the abdomen is a termite reproductive. Swarmers indoors mean a mature colony in or very near the structure, which is a serious finding. Next, check for mud tubes: their presence points to subterranean termites, their absence with six-sided frass pellets points to drywood.
A winged ant, not a termite
Identifiable with care
A sharply pinched waist, elbowed antennae, and front wings noticeably longer than the back pair make this an ant reproductive. If the ant is large and black with an evenly rounded thorax, carpenter ants are likely, and they indicate wet or decayed wood somewhere. Correcting that moisture is the part that lasts.
Looking from the side, how many bumps are on the narrow waist?
Hold it against a light background. One node or two is the first real fork in ant identification.
Odorous house ant
Identifiable with care
The crushed-ant odour is decisive and no other common household ant does it. This species buds into new colonies when disturbed by repellent products, so identification genuinely changes the right response: sanitation, moisture correction, and sealing outperform spraying here.
Carpenter ant
Identifiable with care
The thorax seen from the side is evenly rounded in a single smooth arch, with no spines or dips. This is the most reliable carpenter ant feature and it separates the genus from nearly every other large ant.
Pavement ant
Identifiable with care
The head and thorax carry fine parallel grooves running front to back, visible under a hand lens as a striped or engraved texture.

Needs an expert
Tiny pale ants are difficult to separate without magnification, and the distinction matters a great deal in apartments, hospitals, and care settings, because pharaoh ants bud when treated with the wrong approach and spread between units. Have a specimen identified before anyone acts.

Is the body smooth and hairless, or covered in bristles?
This single question separates a bed bug from the insect most often mistaken for one.
Bed bug
Identifiable with care
Adults are 4 to 5 mm, roughly the size and shape of an apple seed — flat and oval when unfed, swollen and elongated to nearly cylindrical after feeding.
A carpet beetle larva, not a bed bug
Identifiable with care
This is the single most common false bed bug alarm, and the relief is warranted: carpet beetles do not bite and do not feed on people. They feed on wool, silk, feathers, and other animal fibres, so thorough vacuuming and proper storage address them completely.
How large is it, and what marks are behind the head?
German cockroach
Identifiable with care
Two dark parallel stripes run front to back on the pronotum, the shield-like plate behind the head. This is the single decisive feature.
American cockroach
Identifiable with care
Very large at 34 to 53 mm, the largest cockroach commonly found in US homes.
Oriental cockroach
Identifiable with care
Very dark, almost glossy black to deep reddish-brown, noticeably darker than any other common house cockroach.
Brown-banded cockroach
Identifiable with care
Two pale transverse bands run across the wings and abdomen, running side to side. The German cockroach's stripes run front to back on the pronotum instead, and this is the key separator.
What is the body shape and where did you find it?
Black widow
Identifiable with care
Mature females are glossy jet black with a red or orange hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen — visible only from below, so the spider must be seen from underneath or in its web.
Possibly a recluse — but confirm before concluding
Needs an expert
Brown recluses are among the most over-reported spiders in North America, and the great majority of reports from outside the established range turn out to be something else. The deciding feature is six eyes in three pairs, not the violin mark, and that needs magnification. If you are outside the central and southern Midwest and mid-South, the odds are strongly against it. Have a specimen identified rather than assuming.

Wolf spider
Identifiable with care
Eight eyes in three rows, with two very large forward-facing eyes that reflect light brightly under a torch. A recluse has six eyes in three pairs and no eyeshine.
Cellar spider
Identifiable with care
Extremely long, thin, fragile legs — up to five or six times the body length — with a small, pale, elongated body.
What markings are on the shield behind the head?
Species decides which illnesses are plausible, which is the only reason it matters here.
Blacklegged tick
Needs an expert
Adult females have a solid dark reddish-orange abdomen with a distinct solid black shield behind the head, and no white markings or ornamentation.

American dog tick
Identifiable with care
The shield behind the head carries conspicuous white or silvery mottled ornamentation, unlike the blacklegged tick's solid dark shield.
Lone star tick
Identifiable with care
Adult females carry a single conspicuous white or cream spot in the centre of the back — the "lone star" — which is unmistakable and needs no magnification.
Brown dog tick
Identifiable with care
Uniform reddish-brown with no white ornamentation on the shield, separating it from the American dog tick.
How big is the animal, and how long is the tail?
Tail length relative to the body separates the two rats; size separates rats from mice.
Is the belly and tail sharply two-toned?
This matters for a health reason, not a pest reason.
Deer mouse — handle the cleanup differently
Identifiable with care
This identification changes what you should do next, and that is the whole reason it is in the key. Deer mice are the primary reservoir of hantavirus in North America, and the risk comes from breathing dust raised from nests, droppings, and urine in enclosed spaces. Do not dry-sweep or vacuum the material. Ventilate the space first and follow CDC guidance before cleaning.
House mouse

Droppings are 3 to 6 mm, rod-shaped with pointed ends, and scattered widely rather than deposited in one place — a single mouse produces dozens per day.
Norway rat
Identifiable with care
The tail is shorter than the head and body combined — laid back along the animal it does not reach the shoulders. This separates it from the roof rat.

The tail is longer than the head and body combined — laid back it reaches past the shoulders. This is the decisive separator from the Norway rat.

Drywood termite
Identifiable with care
Fecal pellets are the defining evidence — hard, elongated, roughly 1 mm, six-sided in cross-section with concave faces, and they range from pale cream to dark brown regardless of the wood colour.
Carpenter bee
Identifiable with care
The top of the abdomen is shiny, black, and hairless — this is the decisive separator from a bumble bee, whose abdomen is densely furry.
What is the texture of the material?
Rub a little between finger and thumb. This one test separates two very different problems.
Powderpost beetle
Identifiable with care
The frass is extremely fine and talc-like, flowing freely like flour when disturbed — this is decisive against drywood termite pellets, which are hard and six-sided.
What are you noticing?
Noises overhead versus at floor level tell you which animal
Where the sound is decides a great deal. Scratching in an attic or ceiling at night points to roof rats, squirrels, or bats; scurrying at floor level and in basements points to house mice or Norway rats. Daytime activity in an attic is more often squirrels than rodents. Look for droppings along the route, because their size and shape will settle it.
