How to recognise it

Why an infestation persists

Despite the name this is primarily an outdoor and sewer-associated insect in most of the country, entering buildings through drains, sump pits, and gaps at grade. That distinction matters: sightings usually indicate an entry route and a moisture condition rather than an established indoor breeding population, which is the opposite of what a German cockroach sighting means. In Gulf Coast states they also live outdoors in palms and leaf litter, which is where the name "palmetto bug" comes from.

Where it occurs

Throughout the United States, most abundant in the Southeast and in Gulf Coast states; strongly associated with sewers, steam tunnels, and moist basements.

Where to look for it

  • Floor drains in basements, garages, laundry rooms, and boiler rooms — check whether the trap still holds water.
  • Sump pits, and the gap around the sump discharge pipe where it leaves the building.
  • Sewer clean-out access points and any disused or capped drain line.
  • Crawl spaces and the void beneath a ground-floor bath or shower.
  • Outside, in leaf litter, mulch beds, tree holes, and the crowns of palms in southern states.
  • Steam tunnels, service ducts, and the shared basement of an apartment building.

When you see it, and why

Indoor sightings rise sharply in late summer and after heavy rain, when sewer and outdoor harbourage floods and pushes insects upward through drains. They rise again in the first cold snap as insects move in from outdoors. Both patterns point at the same thing: this is an insect entering from elsewhere, not one breeding in your kitchen, and the timing is a clue that the route matters more than anything found indoors.

What getting the identification wrong costs you

Calling this a German cockroach is the expensive direction of the error, and it happens because "cockroach in the kitchen" reads the same to most people. The responses are opposite: an American cockroach needs the drain and the grade-level gap closed, while a German cockroach needs harbourage reduction and a population brought down. Treating an American cockroach sighting as a breeding infestation buys a service contract for an insect that came up a drain. Size settles it instantly — this one is three times longer.

What it costs

This is usually a maintenance cost rather than a pest control one. A drain cover, restoring water to a dry trap, and sealing the gap where a service pipe enters at grade address most complaints. Where paid work is warranted — a shared basement, a broken sewer lateral — the useful part is the drainage investigation, and that is a plumber's job as often as a pest operator's.

What prevents it

  1. Fit and maintain drain covers, and keep floor-drain and sump traps filled so the sewer route is closed.
  2. Seal gaps at grade level, around utility penetrations, and beneath exterior doors.
  3. Correct basement and crawl space moisture, which is what makes the interior habitable.
  4. Clear leaf litter, mulch, and debris away from the foundation.

Commonly confused with

Oriental cockroach Blatta orientalis

Very dark, almost glossy black to deep reddish-brown, noticeably darker than any other common house cockroach.

Smoky brown cockroach Periplaneta fuliginosa

Uniform dark mahogany to near-black with a glossy sheen, and — importantly — no pale margin on the pronotum, which separates it from the American cockroach.

German cockroach Blattella germanica

Two dark parallel stripes run front to back on the pronotum, the shield-like plate behind the head. This is the single decisive feature.
