How to recognise it

- Sharply two-toned colouring — brown to greyish above with a crisply white belly, feet, and underside, with a clean dividing line rather than a gradual blend.
- The tail is distinctly bicoloured, dark above and white below, which the house mouse's uniformly greyish tail is not.
- Eyes are large and prominent, and ears are large and thinly furred.
- The body measures 70 to 100 mm excluding the tail, making it slightly larger and longer-legged than a house mouse seen alongside it.

Why an infestation persists
Deer mice are the primary reservoir of Sin Nombre hantavirus in North America, which causes hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Infection risk is associated with breathing dust from disturbed nests, droppings, and urine in enclosed spaces — cabins, sheds, crawl spaces, and stored vehicles that have been closed up. That is the entire reason this identification matters to a homeowner, and it changes how a contaminated space should be handled: ventilate before entering and do not dry-sweep or vacuum the material.

Across most of the United States, predominantly in rural, wooded, and grassland settings rather than dense urban areas.
Where to look for it
- Cabins, sheds, barns, and outbuildings that have been closed up for a season — the classic hantavirus exposure setting.
- Stored vehicles, boats, caravans, and machinery, particularly under seats and inside air filter housings.
- Stored feed, birdseed, and pet food in an outbuilding.
- Wall voids and insulation in rural properties, and the space behind stored boxes.
- Woodpiles, brush piles, and dense vegetation within a few metres of an outbuilding.
When you see it, and why
Movement into buildings peaks in autumn, and the risk period that matters is the following spring — when people open up a cabin, shed, or stored vehicle that has been sealed all winter with a rodent population inside. That is the exposure scenario in most documented cases: an enclosed space, accumulated droppings and nesting material, and someone sweeping it out. Ventilate before entering, and follow CDC guidance rather than treating it as ordinary cleaning.
What getting the identification wrong costs you
This is the identification on the site with the clearest health consequence. Treated as a house mouse, a contaminated cabin gets swept out dry — which is precisely the action that aerosolises the material and is associated with hantavirus transmission. The distinguishing features are free to check: a crisply white belly and a sharply two-toned tail, dark above and white below. In any rural outbuilding, treat the identification as deer mouse until shown otherwise, because the cost of that assumption is a slower cleanup and the cost of the reverse assumption is considerably higher.

For a heavily contaminated enclosed building the useful service is the cleanup itself, carried out with appropriate respiratory protection and wetting rather than dry sweeping, followed by exclusion.
