How to recognise it
These are the features that identify a carpenter bee. Each one is described in words so the identification works without the diagram.
- The top of the abdomen is shiny, black, and hairless — this is the decisive separator from a bumble bee, whose abdomen is densely furry.
- Large and robust at 12 to 25 mm, with a fuzzy yellow thorax.
- Males hover aggressively near nest sites and cannot sting at all; females can sting but rarely do.

- Perfectly round entry holes about 12 mm in diameter in bare softwood — fascia, eaves, decking, railings, and outdoor furniture.

Why an infestation persists
Carpenter bees excavate galleries in wood to nest rather than eating it, strongly preferring bare, unpainted, weathered softwood. Individual galleries are extended year after year, and cumulative damage over many seasons can become structurally meaningful. Woodpeckers enlarging galleries to reach larvae often cause more visible damage than the bees. They are also effective pollinators.

Throughout the United States, most commonly reported in the South and East.
Where to look for it
- Bare, unpainted, weathered softwood on the south and west elevations, which weather fastest.
- Fascia boards, barge boards, and the underside of eaves.
- Deck railings, handrails, and the underside of deck boards.
- Timber outdoor furniture, pergolas, and fence rails.
- Look for perfectly round 12 mm holes with coarse sawdust and a yellowish stain running down the wood below.
- Woodpecker damage adjacent to holes, which indicates larvae inside and often causes more visible damage than the bees.
When you see it, and why
Activity is conspicuous in spring, when males hover near nest sites and are alarming but cannot sting at all. Galleries are excavated and provisioned through late spring and summer, and new adults emerge in late summer. Autumn, after activity ends, is the window in which filling and finishing the galleries is worthwhile — doing it while a gallery is occupied simply traps the occupants inside.
What getting the identification wrong costs you
Told from a bumble bee by the abdomen: shiny, black, and hairless on top in a carpenter bee, densely furry in a bumble bee. That matters because bumble bees are ground-nesting, several species are in decline, and one is federally listed as endangered — so treating a bumble bee nest as a carpenter bee problem targets the wrong animal in the wrong place. Carpenter bees are also effective pollinators, which is worth weighing before responding to cosmetic damage.
