Droppings
Droppings are the most reliable evidence a rodent leaves, and size and end shape separate the species without ever seeing the animal. Never dry-sweep or vacuum rodent droppings — see the health note below.
How to examine it
- Photograph them in place, beside something for scale — a coin, a pencil tip, or a ruler. Size is the primary diagnostic and memory is unreliable.
- Note where they are concentrated. Along a wall at floor level points to mice or Norway rats; on rafters or in an attic points to roof rats.
- Note whether they are scattered widely or grouped. Mice scatter as they travel; rats deposit more in latrine areas.
- Look at the ends under good light. Pointed at both ends, blunt at both ends, or spindle-shaped is the separator once size has narrowed it.
- Check whether they are fresh — dark and pliable — or old, grey, and crumbling. That tells you whether the problem is current.
- Mark the area, clear it once safely, and check again in three days. Fresh droppings in a cleared area confirm active use of that route.

What else gets mistaken for this
- Seeds and grain husks, which are the commonest false alarm in a pantry. Seeds are uniform, symmetrical, and split cleanly; droppings are not, and crumble rather than snap.
- Mouse-shaped debris from insulation, mouse-grey caulk beads, or fragments of rubber seal, all of which sit where a dropping would but are consistent in size and shape in a way real droppings never are.
- Cockroach droppings, which people frequently read as very small mouse droppings. Roach droppings are blunt-ended and ridged along the sides; mouse droppings taper to a point.
- Bat guano, which resembles mouse droppings in size but crumbles to a glittery powder of insect fragments when pressed, because bats eat insects.
- Slug and snail droppings in a damp basement or garage, which are darker, softer, and usually accompanied by a slime trail.
What this evidence cannot tell you
Droppings tell you which group of animal is present and roughly where it travels. They do not tell you how many animals there are — a single mouse produces dozens of droppings a day, so a substantial scattering is entirely consistent with one animal. They also cannot separate a house mouse from a deer mouse, which matters because the two require different cleanup precautions. In a rural outbuilding, treat the safer assumption as correct rather than trying to read the species from the droppings. Finally, droppings say nothing about whether the entry point has been found. An area that stays clear after cleaning tells you the route is no longer used; it does not tell you the gap has been sealed.
What to do with what you found
Once the size has narrowed it to mouse or rat, the useful next move is not treatment but exclusion: follow the concentration back to where the animals are entering and check every gap of 6 mm for mice or 20 mm for rats. Seal with a material that cannot be gnawed through — steel wool packed and sealed over, metal mesh, sheet metal, or mortar — rather than foam or caulk alone. If the droppings are in an attic or on rafters, the entry is at the roofline and the inspection belongs up there, not in the kitchen.
Common mistakes
- Sweeping or vacuuming before reading the safety note above. This is the single most consequential error on this page.
- Estimating population size from quantity. Volume reflects time elapsed far more than number of animals.
- Clearing the droppings before photographing them, which discards the only evidence available for identification.
- Concluding the problem is over because no new droppings appear, without having sealed anything.
- Assuming droppings in an attic mean the same species as droppings in a basement. They usually do not.
