Frass

The excrement and boring debris an insect pushes out of wood, whose texture identifies the insect that produced it.

Texture is the whole diagnostic. Drywood termite frass is hard six-sided pellets; powderpost beetle frass is flour-fine and flows freely; carpenter ant shavings are coarse and fibrous with insect parts mixed in.
