Mud tube

A pencil-width shelter tube of packed soil built by subterranean termites to travel between the soil and wood without drying out.

Finding a mud tube is the single most decisive observation in termite identification. Drywood termites never build them, so a mud tube points firmly to a subterranean colony living in the soil rather than in the wood.
