Mud tubes
A mud tube is the single most decisive piece of evidence in the whole vertical. It means subterranean termites, and it effectively rules out drywood termites, carpenter ants, and beetles.
How to examine it
- Work along the full foundation perimeter, inside and out, with a torch held close to the wall so the tube casts a shadow.
- Check behind and beneath anything stored against the wall. Tubes are routinely built in the covered gap behind stacked boxes or timber.
- In a crawl space, check the piers, the sill plate, and the underside of joists — a mirror on a handle reaches what you cannot see directly.
- Break a short section of tube open. Pale workers inside mean the tube is active; an empty tube may be abandoned.
- Mark the break with tape and the date. A repaired tube within a few days confirms active use.
- Photograph the tube in context, showing where it runs from soil to timber, not just a close-up of the tube itself.

What else gets mistaken for this
- Mortar drips and render runs left by the original build, which are the commonest false alarm. These are hard, gritty, and bonded to the wall; a termite tube is granular and crumbles between the fingers.
- Mud dauber nests, which are also mud but form a smooth lump or a set of parallel organ-pipe tubes on a sheltered vertical surface, rather than a narrow line running up from soil.
- Efflorescence — white or grey mineral salts leaching through masonry — which is powdery, usually pale, and forms a patch rather than a line.
- Spider and insect debris trails collected in a corner, which contain no soil.
- Old, abandoned tubes from a treated infestation. These are still tubes, and the mark-and-recheck test is what separates them from active ones.
What this evidence cannot tell you
A mud tube is decisive about the group — it means subterranean termites and effectively rules out drywood termites, carpenter ants, and beetles. It is much less informative about everything else. It does not tell you the size of the colony, which lives in the soil and may be some distance away. It does not tell you the extent of damage, because the tube marks a route rather than the timber being consumed. And the absence of tubes does not rule subterranean termites out: they also enter through expansion joints, plumbing penetrations, and the gap where a slab meets a wall, with no visible tube at all.
What to do with what you found
A confirmed mud tube is one of the few findings on this site that warrants a professional inspection promptly rather than at leisure, because the colony is not accessible from inside the building and the damage is structural. Before that visit, do three things: photograph and record every tube you found with its location, note any timber in contact with soil, and note any chronic moisture against the foundation. Those are the conducive conditions an inspection will look for, and correcting them is the durable half of any response regardless of what treatment is chosen.
Common mistakes
- Knocking every tube down before photographing them, which destroys the record an inspector needs and tells you nothing.
- Concluding there are no termites because no tubes were found. Slab and penetration entry leaves none.
- Treating an empty tube as proof the problem is over without marking and re-checking.
- Storing timber, boxes, or firewood against a foundation wall, which is where tubes are built out of sight.
- Reading a conducive-conditions finding as an all-clear on infestation, or the reverse.
