Why an infestation persists

Colonies die off in winter in most of the country and the nest is not reused.

Where to look for it

  • The ground, watching for a steady stream of insects entering and leaving a single hole in turf or a bank — the most common and most dangerous nest site to mow over.
  • Wall voids, entered through a gap in siding, a weep hole, or around a vent, with traffic at one small opening.
  • Attics, soffits, and the void behind fascia.
  • Dense shrubs, hedges, and ivy on a wall.
  • Around refuse bins, outdoor dining areas, and recycling in late summer, where the insects seek sugar and protein.
  • Before any mowing or hedge trimming, watch the area for two minutes from a distance — this is the single cheapest safety habit in the category.

When you see it, and why

Colonies start small in spring with a single queen and grow all season, peaking in late summer and early autumn — which is when nearly all stings occur and when the insects switch to scavenging human food. This curve has a direct practical consequence: the same nest that was unnoticeable in June is a genuine hazard in September. Colonies die off in winter in most of the country and the nest is not reused, so an old nest found in spring needs no action at all.

What getting the identification wrong costs you

Confusing a yellowjacket with a honey bee has consequences in both directions. A honey bee colony should go to a beekeeper for live removal, and destroying one needlessly removes a pollinator; a yellowjacket nest near a doorway is a genuine hazard that a beekeeper will not take. The check is the body surface: yellowjackets are smooth, glossy, and sharply patterned; honey bees are visibly fuzzy and duller golden-brown. Interest in your food is also telling — honey bees have none.

What a professional actually does

The reason to pay for this is location and timing, not the nest itself. A ground nest beside a path, a wall-void nest above a doorway, or any nest where someone in the household has a sting allergy is work with a real injury risk attached, and it is normally done at night when the colony is inside and least active. Ask whether the wall-void entrance will be sealed after the colony is dealt with, and specifically whether the nest material will be removed — abandoned nest material in a wall can attract secondary pests.

  1. Keep refuse bins closed and clean, and cover food and sweet drinks outdoors in late summer.
  2. Check the ground and shrubs for traffic before mowing or trimming.
  3. Seal gaps at the roofline, in siding, and around utility entries in spring, before colonies establish.

Commonly confused with

Body is densely covered in fine hairs, giving a fuzzy appearance, and the colouring is muted golden-brown to amber with darker bands rather than bright yellow.
