Alpha-gal syndrome

An acquired allergy to mammalian meat that can develop after a bite from certain ticks, notably the lone star tick in the United States.

This is the most unusual consequence of a tick bite in North America and it is the main reason lone star tick identification matters to the public. Symptoms are typically delayed by several hours after eating, which is why it often goes unrecognised.
